Heart Month: Supporting Senior Heart Health and Well-Being

February is Heart Month, so we’re shining a spotlight on senior cardiovascular health and the importance of a heart-healthy lifestyle!

After all, a happy, well-pumping heart is the key to staying active in aging, allowing our loved ones to live life to the fullest while maintaining more of their independence and overall well-being. Even if the heart’s taken a few knocks, or had a prior medical experience, it’s not too late to adopt better, more preventative habits.

This month, Just Like Family is dedicated to providing seniors and their families with the information and support they need to make heart health a priority.  Here are some additional tips to help seniors keep their hearts in top condition:

Engage in Gentle Exercise

You don’t need to participate in strenuous exercise to get blood moving and stay in shape. Gentle exercises such as walking, swimming and yoga can be just as beneficial for improving well-being and cardiovascular health, all while not having to put excessive strain on your muscles, joints or all-over body. Chair exercises can also be effective, should it be more comfortable or possible to exercise sitting.

For palpable improvement in health, try for at least 30 minutes of gentle exercise per day.

Manage & Reduce Stress

If you thought stress made your mind hurt, if only you could see what it does to your heart!

For peace of mind, incorporate activities like deep breathing, nature time, meditation and other mindfulness practices into the daily routine.

Stressless hobbies, including music listening, gardening, reading and painting, are also wonderful options for incorporating relaxation and well-being into one’s lifestyle.

Maintain Strong Social Connections

Absence only makes a heart grow fonder when it’s short-term.

Being lonely and socially isolated actually negatively impacts your heart health, which makes it vital for seniors to maintain strong connections with family, friends or community members who bring positive energy and presence into their lives.

Consider signing up for social activities, groups or clubs. Volunteer opportunities also make for a great way to get out and meet with people while being flexible enough to fit other routine and lifestyle needs.

At Just Like Family, we also offer companionship and outing services to help seniors stay connected, active, and engaged, combating loneliness and promoting well-being.

Schedule Regular Checkups

Routine visits to a primary physician or cardiologist are essential for monitoring the heart for any improvements as well as risk factors. Early detection and management of issues such as high blood pressure or cholesterol are imperative for the prevention of heart disease.

Heart-to-Heart

By adopting healthy habits and working closely with healthcare providers, seniors can significantly reduce their risk of heart conditions and enjoy a longer, healthier more fulfilling life.
